summer love, part iv

lemon verbena, with basil and mint on the side.
lemon verbena.

a friend and i took a class at shady acres herb farm years ago, and it was there that i was introduced to lemon verbena. summer is not complete until i have a pot of it on my deck, even though i don’t do a single thing with it, except sniff the leaves.

(i know that makes me sound like a total weirdo.)

not at all.. it’s one of the best scents in the world. I grow lavender for the same reason.

not weird at all. i do things like that all the time. i love hte smell of a fresh can of coffee grounds. hate coffee. (growing up, dad would let me know when he was going to use the can opener to open the new can of coffee – just so i could smell it – upon opening is when it smelled the best) i love the smell of cut grass. makes me sneeze. love the smell of cigars and pipes. would never smoke them. i smell a blanket from my grandparent’s house because it reminds me of them.

Not a weirdo. My favorite part of my garden is the scents that are left on my hands. There are several herbs I’d be willing to grow just for the smell of them when crushed.

And in conjunction with Heather’s comment – I love the smell of pickles but can’t stand the taste. I tried to convince the kids to like pickles just so I can have a jar in the house but it never worked. Now THAT’s weird.

can it be made into a tea? not that just smelling it is all that bad…you weirdo. actually, I have rosemary bushes that have become enormous this summer (planting then in the ground will do that!) but I don’t really use it, just nice to brush against + get the smell on your clothes. um, now I’m the weirdo.

not at all!! I love the smell of that stuff. I finally just put some basil plants out on my fire escape this summer and have somehow managed not to kill them. This gives me hope!

ah yes, the most loveable kind of weirdo! I think I’ve mentioned before my love of cow manure so I guess I’m not a weirdo, I’m a freak!
