felted iphone cozy

a couple of weeks ago i had a yard sale, and jenn and cynthia brought over some stuff to sell. i bought a brown 100% wool sweater from jenn and felted it in the wash that night. and as the washer spun, i drew up plans for a cozy (a sweater!) for my iphone.
and really, there wasn’t much to plan: cut 2 pieces, about 1/4th of an inch wider than the iphone on the right/left/bottom edges. find a button. cut a strip from a felted grey cardigan for the top. do a little decorative embroidery. figure out how to put it all together.
i first wanted to do the embroidery stitches in orange, but found that i liked chartreuse much better against the brown.
the wood button was in my button jar, it’s nothing special — i remember buying it at joann’s fabric.
the biggest decision was how to stitch it together: use a sewing machine? wing it and just stitch? blanket stitch? in the end, i decided to try blanket stitch. i didn’t want the stitching to a focus point, so i used regular thread instead of floss, and then i mussed around a bit with surface to hide it even more after i was done.

and now my iphone has a sweater for fall!

Sweet! It turned out great. And I love the colors. The embroidery is what makes it though.
I have 2 sweaters that have been sitting on my basement floor for exactly 51 weeks now just for the purpose of felting. And look what you did in one weekend!

Yippee!! Look at my sweater. That was a favorite and I wore it on all those cold, lazy days we’re familiar with. So glad your iPhone has adopted it. It looks so happy.

you are right, something is in the air. i have several friends who are going through major purges + re-thinking their spending habits. had a yard sale with one of those friends last fri. but no cool sweaters for felting.

How great! Every time I go thrifting for sweaters, I only find acrylic. Where’s all the wool?
