stirrings : fresh eggs
a new photo from my stirrings collaborator sara of ibbyskibby. we’re sending each other photos of the first signs of spring. here’s the most recent photo from sara, titled fresh eggs:

sara writes:
my chickens had very low egg production over the winter. but Spring is in the coop, and they’re all laying now! perhaps the longer days are responsible for their new fecundity. despite having had chickens for several years now, i still feel like they’re mostly Zach’s hobby and I don’t know much about their biology and laying habits.
they’re cute, though, when I step out the back door and holler CHEEK-INS! cheek-ins! bock bock bock bock! and they run their funny wobbly run to see what treats i brought. banana is the favorite snack.
i didn’t know chickens could act insulted until i offered them brussels sprout leaves and carrot peels.
the eggs are so beautiful! even tho we had chickens while i was growing up, i had an egg-phobia for a while and never ate the eggs from our hens. but it is a dream of mine to have a chick coop someday, when i’m out of the city…

And I just had eggs for breakfast. Mmmm…. We used to have a friend who raised chickens and we would buy a dozen freshly laid eggs for a buck. I miss that.
Oh and I love her chicken call!

I miss my chickens - I used to have chickens when I still lived with Mum and Dad. We made scones with the eggs once and they turned out almost bright yellow. They taste so good. I really miss our chickens and the lovely eggs.
When we first got the chickens we used to talk to them and walk round like chickens. Pretty funny when the customers would come to the door, and you’re standing there clucking and walking like a chicken!

My gran was a chicken fancier. They scared the heck out of me as a kid. Love free range eggs. Had a good friend who was a PA for a patents lawyer and after the stories she told me about battery chickens lived, I only eat free range eggs. At least I know the chicken is having a good life.

It’s true, Our chickens have such a good life! We also have a dog and a cat, who never bother the chickens. The cat might like to, but our big white chickens, named Kai und Kai, would beat her up in a heartbeat and she knows it!
The yolks of these eggs are almost orange, and they make the best quiche!

I love the eggs from the farmers market. So fresh and yummy. I had no idea cheek-ins liked Bananas. Just like my dog.

I love the fact that all the eggs are different colours and sizes! My friends have just got hens but they haven’t had any eggs yet!! I can’t wait to see them!

What a cool pic! I love the different shades and sizes!
I want to have chickens too (we are trying to be as self sufficient as possible) but I have a big lab who likes to bark at chickens so… don’t think they are a good match!

I love the colours of the eggs. You always hear decoraters talk about ‘duck egg blue’. Now I know exactly what colour they mean!

I’m scared of chickens too, but lately I’ve been dreaming of having a few. Aren’t eggs gorgeous - their shape, their color. That description made me happy too with their “funny wobbly run”. Love it! So you’re going to be a country girl someday?
