polaroid collaboration : temptation

Friday, July 31st, 2009

the eleventh of twelve polaroid collaborations between me and the fabulous jen of scissors.paper.glue. we alternate picking a word, and on the last day of the month we each share our polaroid interpretation of that word.

july’s word was temptation.

jen : temptation

jen: fork in the road.

me : temptation

me: i’ve been resisting the yellow chair since february. and now there’s an orange one… hide my wallet!

stones
i’ve put some stones in my etsy shop.

i’m not entirely convinced that they will sell, but the comments i received when i first posted the stones were so unexpected… i may as well see what happens. and eh, if they don’t sell, they are just stones.

so to kick things off, and to see if there’s still interest, i’m giving away the stones pictured above. if you’d like a shot at receiving the set, leave a comment (and include your email address, please!) telling me what herb you most associate with summer. i’ll use a random number generator monday morning to pick the winner.

updated august 3: we have a winner! comment #14 was chosen by the random number generator. thank you, everyone!

sewing books and wine with anna
i’ve been thinking about learning how to sew.

anna had me over on monday evening to look at all of her sewing books. (and to feed me asparagus/pesto/provolone/tomato sandwiches!) we sat in her front yard, drank wine, and thumbed through pages of projects. we discussed how hard it will be for me to avoid collecting fabric like i collect paper (i do not have the room, really, i am not going to go bonkers and buy tons of fabric. famous last words…). we talked about taking a class together.

i just want to be able to make myself a new bag or two. maybe a skirt. and a dress for my bff’s little girl. ok, and maybe try quilting, and make beautiful pieces like my friend melinda (i love this). it’ll be an occasional hobby, and it won’t consume me. right? right!?

i’m still a few months away from indulging this new hobby. i plan to give myself a cheap but functional sewing machine for xmas. then i’ll wait until the dead of winter to take a class. i’ll need something new and fun to keep my mind off the dark and cold. until then, i’ll continue to make a mental list of all the things i want to make…

warehouse, part ii

Monday, July 27th, 2009

1st street north & 2nd avenue
this is my favorite building in the warehouse district. the boarded up windows used to be green, as you can see in last july’s polaroid, warehouse.

a local photographer, jessie (of clewell photography), left me a comment a couple of weeks ago and mentioned the windows are now purple. ack! ick! i thought, i must see that! so i drove over on saturday.

and i actually really like it. i still like the green more, though.

ready!

wednesday

wednesday

wednesday

yesterday when i crawled out of cube-land, it was bright and sunny, and the clouds surrounding the parking lot were stunning. it was storming over my house right that minute, but i was 30 miles away trying to grab photos without including the ugliness of the industrial park…

i drove towards the storm, but the sun stayed over me the entire way home. the garden got a good dousing, and i stayed dry.

coming soon…

chairs
this week is not going as planned. eerrg.

i was hoping to have these little chair books in my etsy shop by now, but work that pays the bills is getting in the way. so it’ll be a few days, maybe by the end of the weekend.

stones are on hold… hopefully the give-away will be ready by next week. and maybe some stones will find their way into my shop.

and i still plan to do a screenprinting tutorial. eventually.

until then…

scary squirrel

Friday, July 17th, 2009

scary squirrel actually lives in the house, terrorizing the books on my bookshelf
sweet melinda made this scary squirrel, and gave him to me when we met in lawrence. she also gave me bubbles and sidewalk chalk — perfect for the inner child. i’m hoping to find some play time this weekend…

i’m still a little floored by the comments on my herb garden stones. i just thought they were silly doodles to fill some time… thank you, all, i wasn’t expecting they’d generate so much interest. maybe a give-away is in order…

happy weekend!

etsy : whimsy & spice : honey lavender shortbread cookies
i’ve been craving baked goods lately. nothing big and heavy, just something simple and sweet. these honey lavender shortbread cookies from whimsy & spice would be perfect.

has anyone ordered edibles from etsy? if so, did the order arrive quickly, and was it any good?

jam

Monday, July 13th, 2009

jam
i canned raspberry jam yesterday.

i was hoping to use raspberries from my yard. i transplanted little raspberry plants from my grandparent’s house 7 years ago. my grandparents are gone now, and every summer the raspberries remind me of my grandmother’s raspberry pie… so yummy. but the bushes are in a shady part of the yard, and i’ll be lucky to get a quart this year.

so i rode my bike to the farmer’s market and bought 2 quarts of locally grown raspberries. i cooked up some jam when i got home, and canned it. the jam didn’t get as thick as it probably should be, but i did test it out and it was just fine.

yum

rakugaki

Friday, July 10th, 2009

rakugaki
while in lawrence, i accompanied melinda on a stroll down massachusetts street, and we spent a lot of time in sarah’s fabrics. if you know me well, you know i say i can’t sew.

but i fell in love with this fabric: lavender rakugaki by megumi sakakibara. melinda and i stared and stared, left to browse other fabric, came back, stared, pointed out all the little figures to each other, and in the end, we both caved. i bought a yard.

and i still say i can’t sew. but then i remember my 8th grade home economics class, where we all had to make a pound puppy. i made mine out of white flannel, with purple paisley ears and tail. and while i was supposed to be working on my pound puppy, i sneakily made a friend a mini, tiny ESPRIT bag (remember those?!). i was so worried my teacher would catch me and yell at me for not working on my stupid puppy. and when she finally caught me working on my goofy little ESPRIT bag, she ooo’d and aww’d and approved of my little side project.

maybe this fabric will inspire me to bug someone to let me use their sewing machine. until then, i need to find the perfect project.

happy weekend!

coneflowers
lately i’ve been feeling like summer is passing me by, and it’ll be gone before i know it. i must remember to live in the moment. and spend as much time outside as possible… or move to a more southern locale.

same spot in february.

a beauty

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

a beauty
while in lawrence, i met the lovely my whimsy, also known as leslie. she’s been a flickr contact of quite a few of us, and jackie knew she lived in kansas city so she invited leslie to join us at the soap pARTy. and she came, despite never having met any one of us before! brave girl.

leslie had this thing of beauty with her, also known as the polaroid sx-70 land camera. i could have cared less that it was a camera, i was just so enamored with the design of this “thing”: the stainless steel. the leather. it was sleek, trim, and reminded me of an art deco cigarette case. that it was a polaroid camera was the icing on the cake. so when i got home i went to ebay and placed my bid. it arrived last weekend.

i haven’t had time to play with it yet… my fingers are crossed, i hope it works!

white
the weekend went by too fast. but i did read (and enjoyed) my book. and i did do some rock picking on the lake superior shore. this time around, i focused on the white stones. i have so many of the perfect blue stones, so it was fun to pick out the perfect whites. and i found some fossilized coral, a little prize amongst the millions…
