black river crossing
this weekend i’m going to michigan’s upper peninsula. i’ll be staying at the black river crossing b&b (owned & operated by sue & stan, who are wonderful people), and i’ll be making an attempt to ski in the yooperbeiner. i haven’t cross-country skiied in 2 years, and my level of physical activity has been minimal lately. i’m not quite sure i’ll be able to finish 26k… but i’ll definitely earn my sauna time!

i won’t have a lot of time for creative activities, but i do plan on bringing my knitting. i’m determined to finish my wrap before summer arrives!

happy weekend!

chinatown (ii)
chinatown (ii)
acrylic on canvas
2002

a second chinatown fish market painting that hangs next to chinatown (i). this was painted the night after i painted chinatown (i), but the style is a lot more gestural — i think the subject matter is still recognizable, though. and i tried to use the same color palette to tie the paintings together. one tiny success with painting? eh… i still enjoy it even if it is a tad simple.

fabric from ikea
i went to ikea last night to pick up the bulbs for our pARTy lights because i got the wrong size when i bought the lamps (oops!). while i was there i decided to swing through the textile section and check one last time to see if i could find the fabric i have in mind for the interior of my felt bags. i couldn’t find it the last time i was there. oh hey, there it is! it’s on a second rack hiding behind the cutting table.

so of course, i bought more fabric (pernilla and patricia) than i need. i haven’t even cut the felt yet for the bags. will i ever make them? and i have an idea for the etsy shop that involves both the felt and fabric, but i have yet to make a prototype… i still, for some reason, feel the need to buy the fabric for these projects that have yet to take physical form. whhhyyyy?

when it comes to craft and art supplies, i have no self control…

louchelab : i miss summer art kit
last week i was contacted by aya of louchelab and she asked me if i’d like to do a trade. she really liked my mustard photo album, and her beautiful woodland bookmarks were about the same price, so i readily agreed!

aya’s illustrations are amazing, and i love the bookmarks she sent me in the trade. now i will stop using receipts to mark my last page! in addition to her beautiful illustrations, aya also makes books, art kits, toys, and more. i’m featuring her i miss summer art kit, because i miss summer, too! aya, warm weather will be here soon!

pARTy : lights
last friday was pARTy night, and 5 of my wonderful friends came over and we decorated ikea grono lamps. i am in awe of the creativity — the lights are just amazing! it’s always so fun to see what my friends come up with when we get together to create. (i just wish the photos would do them justice!) i’ve got detailed descriptions of the lights and more photos after the jump…

lights for pARTy
it’s friday and tonight is a pARTy night! i haven’t really had a pARTy since last july. there have been a few creative events since then, but not a true pARTy, so i’m looking forward to tonight. friends, cheese, wine, and lots of art supplies!

tonight we’ll be customizing lights using ikea’s grono lamp. most attendees will be working with 2 lamps, and i’ve got a bunch of ideas to get everyone started. i made my own light last fall: it’s titled fisch, and i assemblaged pages from a german art history book with cut outs of a paul klee painting onto the glass. it looks a lot better in person than it does in the pictures. i’ll post pictures of our new creations next week!

happy weekend!

in collaboration artist talk @ open book : feb 23

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

in collaboration is the current exhibit at the open book lobby gallery. from minnesota center for book arts:

the exhibit presents selected work from an evolving journal project between julie baugnet and philippe costaglioli. both professors at st. cloud state university and both avid journalists, baugnet and costaglioli collaborated by exchanging two hand-bound journals and finding inspiration in each others’ expressions (costaglioli’s words, baugnet’s images).

on saturday, february 23, at 3:30pm there will be an artist talk and poetry ready at open book’s coffee gallery. the artists will discuss their collaborative process and show their journals. costaglioli will read his latest fable the king of grass. readings will be given in catalan, english and french.

i’ve been able to take a quick look at the work, but do hope to examine the work more closely soon, or even attend the artist talk.

moose & sadies
photo: moose & sadies

anna
and i met for a lovely lunch today at moose & sadies. when i saw butternut squash and pear on the soup board, i looked to anna and asked “do i dare have squash soup for a 4th day in a row?!”. she laughed and basically stated that i might as well continue along with my week of squash. so we each ordered a cup, along with a smoked gouda and avocado sandwich. both were wonderful, and it didn’t occur to me to photograph the soup until a barista whisked away the empty cup…

coptic binding @ mcba

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

coptic binding
last night i went to mcba’s coptic binding workshop. i have taken it before, but it was over 3 or 4 years ago, and the binding technique never really stuck. i remember trying to teach jenn after a few glasses of wine and it was a mess! but i have book ideas for my etsy shop that involve coptic binding, and i’m itching to make them. i have the paper and ideas ready to go!

sue, the instructor, was great. she shared her knowledge, was very friendly & funny, and patient. i’m pretty sure she taught the first coptic binding workshop that i attended. buuuttt…

while the plan was to bind 2 books: one with 2 needles, the second with 4, we barely made it through the 2 needle binding. i think the process of covering book boards for 2 books and then sew them together was a bit too ambitious for a full class, which consisted of a lot of course-mates that were new to book binding. it took us a little longer than i think was expected to get past covering boards/folding signatures, leaving us with less than an hour’s time to devote to sewing/binding. we didn’t have time to explore the 4 needle technique. however, we did take some awesome curved needles home to experiment with!

despite my disappointment with not being able to spend more time on binding/sewing, i will still take mcba’s workshops, as i always learn something new from the instructors. last night’s valuable tip: teflon “bone” folders do not burnish your paper as much as traditional bone folders do. that’s big for me — i was wondering how to avoid shiny areas on my paper when utilizing the bone folder. (and frankly, as a vegetarian, my bone folders freak me out a bit - where have they come from?! please don’t tell me. but then, what does the production of teflon do to our environment? arg!)

and despite the little sad book i produced (pictured above, on the guillotine, awaiting its execution), i do feel a little more confident about coptic binding. i just will need to do a few more practice runs before i jump into the etsy projects!

altered book : squash
in honor of the wonderful butternut squash, a painted entry in my altered book

it’s still frigid here, and i’ve been eating a lot of soup lately. it occurred to me on the way home from work last night that in the course of 2 days, it has already been the week of squash. i am almost embarrassed to admit that: 1) monday i had pacific’s creamy butternut squash soup for lunch. then 2) yesterday’s lunch was my favorite butternut squash & apple soup from ambrosia coffee bar. and 3) last night i made cooking light’s golden winter soup for this friday’s pARTy/soup swap (which, btw, is amazing!). and i’ll probably have some of the latter for lunch today. am i a nut? or a butter-nut? sorry, bad humor for wednesday. i just hope i don’t turn orange. i love you, butternut squash!

rachel austin : four lanterns
i look at rachel’s etsy shop weekly: i love her work and always get little lightning bolts of inspiration when i look at her paintings and prints. then i make it a point to “try to paint tonight”, but before you know it, it’s almost midnight and my paints are far from my studio table. sigh. i still love looking, though.

the above painting, titled four lanterns, is one of my favorites!

mobile!
i finally finished my mobile for the elsie marley mobile swap! it’s the first mobile i’ve made as an adult, and it seemed to take forever to make. i was a little stressed out about whether or not it would turn out, which aided the procrastination. but i didn’t really do anything fancy, and in the end it wasn’t too difficult to make. i do plan on writing a “make it” post for those that may want to make one at home, but i probably won’t have it ready until next monday. hang tight!

the mobile needs to be in the mail by wednesday, so i’ll enjoy it for another day or two, then make one for me!

art lunch @ gallery co

art lunch @ gallery co
yesterday we met at ambrosia coffee bar for warm panini sandwiches, then off to gallery co to see james henkel’s apples and oranges. i especially loved his apple photographs, staged and shot in a studio. color, or black & white, each photograph was composed to highlight the natural beauty of the apple, but the composition itself was unexpected: a ring of apples seeming to stand on its own… a string bowl for an apple… all thoroughly enjoyable. the show closes february 29.

happy weekend!

book artist and mcba instructor jody williams has won the 2008 minnesota book artist award! the award is a new honor co-sponsored by mcba and the friends of the saint paul public library, presented as part of the annual minnesota book awards.

an exhibit celebrating jody’s work will run february 12 through march 2 in open book’s cowles literary commons. a reception will be held friday, february 15 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at mcba, with a brief presentation at 6:30. the reception is free and open to the public, and will feature refreshments and live music.

i’ve been a fan of jody’s small books since i first saw them at mcba years ago, and i’ve taken one of her boxmaking courses (here’s a result). she’s teaching extreme boxmaking in march - i am unable to take it as i’ll be out of town the first weekend of the course. arg! i’ll have to settle for enjoying the exhibit.

oneblackbird : heart pordelain tag
i am currently loving diana fayt’s ceramics, and she’s got a great little etsy shop: oneblackbird. in honor of valentine’s day, i’m featuring her heart porcelain tag. she has others, and a row of porcelain tags would be beautiful on any wall!

i also love her small cherry plate in deep red. so far, i’ve been able to resist the temptation to buy myself a gift for being single and thirty-something for this upcoming hallmark holiday…

felt for bags

felt for bags
the felt i ordered from woolfeltcentral.com for our handmade bags arrived over the weekend! a couple of us girls are going to try to make bags using a burda style article: how to make a felt bag (found via the craftzine.com blog). i think all of us have a few other projects going on right now, so it may be a few weeks before photos of the finished products show up here. for now, enjoy the great colors!

that’s a wrap! (maybe)

wrap!
i got the knitting bug this week, after i saw this gorgeous cowl on the wiksten-made blog the other day. i haven’t knitted a thing this winter. i did start a blanket, but after casting on 184 stitches onto one needle and ending up with 196 stitches after knitting 3 rows, i kinda gave up (heather, i don’t know how you did it!). but the cowl got me itching to make at least one warm, fuzzy thing before the winter is over.

i’ve made about 5 scarves, and i don’t need any more. so i’m trying to make a wrap. i love my fold wrap from uniform studio, but i want something bigger and cozier to have at my desk at work. something almost blanket-like, since i freeze all winter. and i can’t really bring in my fleece blankey with hockey sticks & pucks (made by my favorite goalie, ann) to swaddle myself in when clients are about…

i stopped at borealis yarns after work on thursday, and picked up a big skein of 100% peruvian highland wool (fancy!) in grey. i’m modifying the poncho pattern anna gave me last year, but instead of knitting 2 pieces and sewing them together, i’m just knitting one piece. i’ve added some stitches to make it slightly wider, and i’m going to knit until the skein is gone!

yay, it’s friday - have a great weekend! make something!
