snap crafted pop 2.1!

snap.crafted.pop!
so, after my post on monday about days not going as planned, i immediately committed myself to another event. see why my days don’t go as planned?! but i think this is going to be really fun: i’m participating in the extended weekend of snap.crafted.pop 2.1!, a holiday shopping event in linden hills. last weekend’s event was so successful that the organizer added another weekend, and i snapped up a spot left open by an original vendor that wasn’t able to participate. i’m looking forward to having my work in a new event (for me), and there’s the added bonus of easy holiday shopping! (also: i hear they serve beer!)

snap.crafted.pop 2.1! is this saturday the 8th, 10am-3pm and sunday the 9th, 12-4pm

4312 upton avenue south (former bayers hardware store)

willow house holiday craft fair!
this friday is the 3rd annual willow house holiday craft fair! i’ve been a participant each year (thanks, kristen!) and it’s become an event that i look forward to as we inch towards xmas. i think the best part is sipping wine and chatting with friends and the other artists, and doing a little shopping (or trades!). swing by if you’re local! i’m bringing boxes of trader joe’s candy cane joe-joe’s!

mid-november

mcba book arts festival this saturday!
here we are, in mid-november. it doesn’t feel like november to me at all. i’m not sure what it feels like, but it definitely doesn’t feel like november. monday morning we had fluffy snowflakes, wreaking havoc on the morning commute, and that evening the temperature dropped to the teens. but since then, it has been on the warmer side and pleasant. which is fine to me, winter can take its sweet time! but i think winter’s delayed arrival also has us forgetting the holidays are right around the corner.

which brings me to tomorrow: i’ll be participating in minnesota center for book art’s 11th annual book arts festival for the 3rd year in a row. come by and say hi, and buy some holiday goodies!

happy weekend!

ps: today is the last day to get my new book chairs : a polaroid collection at the love-you-guys price of $14.95! after today the price goes back to $19.95.

prepping for may

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

my vendor application was accepted for craftstravaganza! it’s one of the bigger craft sales in the twin cities, and definitely the biggest one i’ve participated in. i’m used to small fairs/sales, usually under 30 vendors, but on saturday, may 12, i’ll be one of over 140 vendors. and i need my work to stand out and sell! and it’s 8 short weeks away!

i’ve played around with displaying my work since my first sale in 2010. i first started with rigid piles that were geometric and neat, but then i was told that people were afraid of messing up the order and weren’t picking any of my work up. so then i tried putting my work into bowls and platters, which i think worked better, but still makes for sensory overload. i really need a better way to display my work (and to maybe pare down the options?), so i started sketching ideas over the weekend:

quick sketch of display ideas

i really need a tall display to grab people’s attention. i’m thinking about a small sandwich board that could display my cards on the table? i also need depth on the table… maybe a little shelf to stand books on might catch people’s eyes? and there will be a white wall behind me… colorful bunting (or is bunting getting old/over-done?) and/or a big orange fish might help bring people to me…

i did buy some boards/panels after drawing my sketches. unfortunately the options weren’t available in the same type of wood, so now i’m debating if i’m going to want mixed woods or if i should spray paint? maybe gold would be fun, especially with my orange table cloth.

i’ll share what i come up with!

last minute
about a month ago, we decided to do a christmas market… we being martha, eireann, cynthia, julia, and me. as if we don’t already have enough craziness swirling around at this time of the year, we thought it’d be fun to add more! and it’s coming together nicely: we each take a to-do when we can, we’ve found a great location (modern times cafe), and we’ve got amazing artists joining us.

yes, we’re sorta crazy, but i think we all like it that way. if you’re in town, come by and see us. if you’re not in town, tell the people you know that live here about our last minute handmade gift market!

goods for mcba's 10th annual book arts festival
i haven’t done a good job of participating in merry go round as of late, but this month’s topic is relevant: do you do fairs/shows?

i haven’t done any yet this year, but i will be participating in minnesota center for book arts 10th annual book arts festival on saturday, november 19 (my post about pariticpating in last year’s festival is here). this week i started to collect inventory for the fair. i also started making lists: items i still need to make, stuff i need to bring, errands to run. last year i was overstocked for every show i participated in, so this year i’m trying not to over-do it and not have a freak-out over imaginary low inventory.

this week i noticed that there were vendor spots open for the nokomis urban craft fair, held on saturday november 12. that’s about 2 weeks away… so yes, let’s add more crazy to the mix! i’ve been having a hard time getting moving on production, so if i add another show at the last minute, that might be the kick in the ass i need to get making.

i’m picky about which fairs i’ll do — i’m not sure i can commit to a 2-day event. i also prefer to do fairs close to the holiday season. despite the potential craziness of the next few weeks, i’m excited for these 2 shows! you know what i’ll be doing this weekend…

see what everyone else has to say:

laura at blue terracotta
monika at red 2 white
ruth at birdland creations
kim at vilt a la kim
sara at crafts of texture
samantha at vintage is for lovers
mariana at florcita
agathe at le bar du vent
mitsy at artmind
bethany at dirksen dabbles

happy weekend!

yes! deep fried candy bars. makes my teef hurt thinking about them...
state fair, august 29, 2010

today is the first day of the minnesota state fair! and if you’re thinking, what? fair? like with farm animals and manure? WHY? then you are not from minnesota, which has the biggest and best state fair (according to wikipedia, it is largest state fair in the united states in terms of average daily attendance. texas? eh). it’s held smack-dab in between the very metropolitan & urban cities of st. paul and minneapolis, and you are missing out. my trip to the fair is when i get to hit my quota for fried foods for the year. and you can drink beer and see baby cows being born and hot damn! weezer is playing at the grandstand! so is def leppard! and i can hear it from my house!

clearly this event is something we get very excited about.

to celebrate, i’m offering my minnesota state fair polaroid magnets for only $8 today through the last day of the fair, which is labor day (september 5). they’re normally $12! this is a good deal, and you’ll be able to experience the fair year round, without teasing your hair or sitting in your car for hours on snelling avenue.

the girl with the cool boots didn't want to tell me the tin sculptures were made in mexico
last saturday i met my bff for a day at the buffalo craft fair with her 6-year-old son. while my aesthetics aren’t a great fit for most of the goods there, it’s still fun to wander and see what people spend their time making. mini-donuts are a must. and so is looking for $5 items that the little guy could “buy” with mom’s money. i brought home one of those tin roosters (made in mexico!), mostly because it reminded of me of this post, which makes me laugh every time i read it.

the uptown art fair (the link is broken on their end), the loring park art festival, and the powderhorn art fair are this weekend. i need to get to at least one of them, i’m just not sure which one(s) it will be.

minneapolis! magnets!

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

minneapolis magnets
i was born in minneapolis, and lived there until i was four. i spent my childhood in a small rural town, and i went right back to minneapolis for college and lived there through my early twenties. and then… and then i moved to the quieter twin city… and i’m getting tired of the quiet. i miss minneapolis!

i’m slowly reacquainting myself with my lost love. one of the ways i’ve done so is by seeking out my old favorite haunts with my sx 70 land camera to create a set of polaroid magnets. i started to take the photos in july, got some additional landmark suggestions from my local fans, and previewed a few of the shots on my facebook page. there are some great ones that got nixed, because i wanted each of the magnets to fit together as a whole. i was little sad not including all of them, but overall i’m excited about this set!

minneapolis magnets are in my etsy shop now, and you can see them in person today at the local art mart!
