my tulips bloomed over the weekend, and i was so excited to see yellow! this is the only second year i’ve had the tulips come up, and i couldn’t remember what colors they were… after hunting for yellow over the winter, it’s such a joy to see yellow in nature again.
spring is really here, and life is good.

spring is here! in the short span of a week, the grass has turned green, my tulips have forced their way through the ground, my rhubarb and columbine have grown 2 inches, and the chives are sweet in a simple salad. after such an agonizing wait, it is spring, and i want to savor every minute of it. i hope spring has found salt lake city, too.

dear sara,
as i write this, it is snowing, and the wind is whipping through the streets of saint paul, rattling my windows, and the temperature dropped 10 degrees in under an hour. major interstates north of the twin cities are closed, due to blizzard conditions. so we, sadly, are very far from spring. but that doesn’t stop me from hoping! last weekend, i went to payless and picked up some yellow, strappy, heeled sandals. for 23 bucks! and if dancing around inside my house, wrapped in blankets, but wearing my new sandals is the only way i’ll feel springy, well, then i’ll just keep dancing around!

as i was walking home today i spotted these adorable lavender blossoms in a dead-looking lawn of groundcover. i took a close shot. then got down to take macro shot, only to discover that the “blossoms” were really melted nerds or some kind of candy. OH, WOE! hee hee!
i love her sense of humor! at least the grass is real, and we haven’t seen green grass in months…

my chickens had very low egg production over the winter. but Spring is in the coop, and they’re all laying now! perhaps the longer days are responsible for their new fecundity. despite having had chickens for several years now, i still feel like they’re mostly Zach’s hobby and I don’t know much about their biology and laying habits.
they’re cute, though, when I step out the back door and holler CHEEK-INS! cheek-ins! bock bock bock bock! and they run their funny wobbly run to see what treats i brought. banana is the favorite snack.
i didn’t know chickens could act insulted until i offered them brussels sprout leaves and carrot peels.
the eggs are so beautiful! even tho we had chickens while i was growing up, i had an egg-phobia for a while and never ate the eggs from our hens. but it is a dream of mine to have a chick coop someday, when i’m out of the city…
