2013 starts today!

Friday, February 1st, 2013

i'm celebrating the arrival of 2013 tonight!
i fully expected that 2013 would be a really awesome year, being that my lucky number is 13, and also because i think i deserve an awesome year. but the first month really sucked. shitty things happened not only to me, but to numerous friends, too. it wasn’t what i was expecting for the new year.

so a friend and i decided that january needs to just fuck off, and that february 1 will be the start of our new year. my fingers are crossed that this month will be better than january, and that each month after gets exponentially awesomer. in the last few weeks i’ve made sure there are trips that i can look forward to… i think i’m getting a promotion at work next week… i really want to get back on a regular running schedule as soon as temps hit double digits again… i’m trying hard to make it better… i have hope that it can be.

let’s fucking rock it, 2013.

happy new year, everyone!

papergoods update

so much paper!
between xmas and nye, i cleaned out the studio a bit, and i’ve added more to my papergoods etsy shop. envelopes in different shapes, colors, and sizes; lots and lots of paper; gift bags; ephemera: vintage stamps, postcards, photos… the majority of it is up, and once we get a sunny weekend i’ll finish up photography and will list the rest.

paper packs!

Thursday, November 15th, 2012

love the way these paper packs look!
over the summer, i looked at my surroundings, and decided i needed to lighten the load.

i love my paper collection, but it’s time to share it with others. some of the paper i’ve had since i made my first painted fish studio books 9+ years ago, some of it is only a few months old, and there were a lot of sheets purchased in between. i’ve gathered it up, divvied it out, and created paper packs that can be purchased in my paper goods etsy shop.

each pack has 5 ounces of paper goodness (that’s almost a half pound!) and is only $10! see them here!

painting of a blue t-shirt
not sure when i painted this. it’s got to be at least 2 years old, if not more. i found it in a drawer last weekend.

i do remember being frustrated that i couldn’t capture in paint what i saw in my head, but now when i look at it, i really like it and wish i had continued and painted more articles of clothing.

the eighties…

Thursday, October 4th, 2012

i was looking for some photographs to take to my 20 year high school reunion (!) next weekend, and i came across some  photots of my room from 1987. i hated the gray paneling (i did eventually paint it an off-white, with black wood trim), but i managed to make the most of the wall space:

rainbow sheets + john taylor!
i was so in love with john taylor. but i also loved fashion magazines and would pull pages out when something caught my eye. remember the esprit print campaign? it was soooooo good. i collected every page.

rainbow sheets + john taylor!
sheesh! messy desk. glad i’m over that phase. it’s fascinating to see how i positioned everything on my walls, and on my bulletin board. here’s a shot of my board from around 1989:

was so enamoured with the vulnerable-looking boys. silly girl.
yeah, boy crazy. but also very concerned about positioning and layout! had no idea at the time that my need for order would play such a big role in my creative life, and in my career…

last thursday i picked up aimee at the airport, and after having a quick lunch, we made our way to a cabin on the shore of lake superior. we were going to meet liv, rachel, carissa, and lori for our 2nd art retreat (our first was october 2010). we were a smaller crowd this time, missing susie and kolleen, but they were there in spirit (and skype!).

i brought up wood bracelets & paint, and we spent an afternoon with those. we took little trips into two harbors. we picked rocks along the lake’s shore, then painted a word on each for each other. we ate well. we watched the sun rise over the lake, and i woke in the middle of the night and was shocked at how bright the stars were.

this time around it felt like the weekend went by really quickly… and i’m already looking forward to our “next time.”

on the raod
a friend sent the above photo last week, taken while on the road. i applied a little bit of a blur to remove the details, making it rothko-esque, and now i’m attempting to paint it with oils…

watercolor, again

project no. 1
i’m finding watercolor to be a relaxing (meditative?) activity on a hot summer day. the above is from project no. 1, water paper paint.

detail of a postcard for a friend
i have been playing with watercolor… not as much as i would like, but i keep everything i need on my dining room table so i can quickly set myself up when the mood strikes.

yay, weekend!

i had forgotten how much paint and paper i had!
i need a little push. i think heather smith jones‘s water paper paint will do the trick.

a new tradition

birthday cards from my birthday week!
my bff’s birthday was in march, and i really wanted to make sure she had a good birthday, especially after finding out she couldn’t take her actual birthday off due to commitments at her job. we both said no birthday gifts this year… so for her birthday, i sent her snail mail for each day of her birthday week. it was mostly postcards, and at the end of the week, i sent a card along with some yummy chocolate.

for my birthday this month, she did the same for me, and i loved it so much! little notes arrived daily (i was in nyc for a few days, so some of the mail was waiting for me when i got home). it was so much better than any material gift — knowing that she had taken the time to write a little something for me for 5 days worth of mail was so awesome. and she included little special bits: a drawing from her son, and a goofy thing from our childhood.

i’m hoping we’ve started a new tradition. you should give it a try, too.

happy weekend!

big bowl on clearance!
i went to target on monday night to pick up a few things, and i found this bowl at the end of an aisle. i couldn’t resist: it’s a perfect blank canvas! i’m not sure how i’m going to decorate it yet, but when i finish it, i’ll share it here. but most importantly, anyone local want me to pick up a bowl for them and join me for a bowl decorating pARTy in march? leave a comment…

happy february!

de kooning and make & do
i’ve started to prepare for the upcoming winter months: i’ve increased my dosage of vitamin d, i’m putting heavier lotion on my already dry skin, and i’ve got new additions to the coffee table.

de kooning in his studio
the first addition: moma’s de kooning : a retrospective. i went to see the show last monday, and it so was stunning that it brought tears to my eyes. and while i still need to work on the biography, i really wanted to have the visuals available to me.

woman, 1950
this is one of my favorite paintings.

make & do spread
the second addition: mollie green’s make & do: paper fascinations for every occasion. paper crafts! inspiration that will be desperately needed mid-january! i’ve been a fan of mollie’s royal buffet etsy shop for a while and i love that she has shared her talent with us.

make & do spread
the book is well designed, and the instructions are easy to follow. i can’t wait to dive in! i think i need to host a garland pARTy in december…

are you doing anything to prep for winter?

apple jack orchards

Monday, September 26th, 2011

gourds, squash, pumpkins

poor ugly turkey!

gourds, squash, pumpkins

apple dumpling with cinnamon ice cream and caramel

apple spice donut

it’s autumn and in minnesota that means everyone makes at least one trip to an apple orchard before it snows. on saturday, i took my editor* out to lunch, and then we went to apple jack orchards. we marveled at the turkey, oogled squash/pumpkins/gourds, and ate yummy apple goods.

and apples! we each bought 1/2 peck of honeycrisps. fall is the only time i will eat apples, and my 1/2 peck will not last long. hopefully it’ll keep the doctor away…

*my editor is also known as my bff heather… she reads my blog every weekday morning and sends me emails when i make errors. she caught 2 gaffes last week, and she makes me look like a better writer than i am. she also contacts me if i haven’t posted by noon, to make sure i’m still alive. she’s the greatest editor ever.

letterpress love : orange and teal

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

while in seattle, i took the ferry to bainbridge island and found paperoost. i stocked up on greeting cards:

letterpress love :
welcome baby snow & graham

letterpress love :
happy birthday sugarcube press

letterpress love :
happy studio olivine

letterpress love :

patchqwirk pikku (top:  posie patch / carrot, bottom: patchqwirk dot / blu)

i didn’t intend to pick only items in orange & teal, and when i looked down at what i had chosen, i laughed out loud… i couldn’t help it: orange + teal = awesomeness.
